Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1651- 1693) was Mexican and a dedicated poet.  In order to devote herself to study and to her writing, she became a nun.  Some years later, the Order of San Jeronimo forbade her to write and continue her scholarly activities, and confiscated her library.
